Moon Phases & Rituals: A Complete Guide to Lunar Living

For millennia, humans have tracked the moon. Farmers planted by it, sailors navigated by it, and spiritual traditions across the world built rituals around its phases. The moon's 29.5-day cycle mirrors our own natural rhythms — and when you align with it, things just seem to flow better.

The 8 Moon Phases

New Moon — New Beginnings

The sky is dark. This is the time to set intentions, plant seeds (literally or metaphorically), and start fresh. Write down what you want to manifest over the next month. Light a white candle and speak your intentions aloud.

Waxing Crescent — Gathering Momentum

A thin sliver of light appears. Energy builds. Take your first small action toward your intentions. Research, plan, reach out. The universe is beginning to respond.

First Quarter — Overcoming Obstacles

Half the moon is illuminated. Challenges arise — this is where most people quit. Push through. The obstacles are teaching you something. Journal about what's blocking you and why.

Waxing Gibbous — Refining

Nearly full. Review your progress. Adjust your approach. Meditate on what needs fine-tuning. This is the editor's phase — cut what doesn't serve, polish what does.

Full Moon — Peak Energy

The moon is fully illuminated. Emotions run high, energy peaks. This is the time for gratitude, celebration, and release. Write down what you're ready to let go of and burn the paper (safely). Charge your crystals under the moonlight.

Waning Gibbous — Sharing Wisdom

The light begins fading. Share what you've learned. Teach someone. Give back. The full moon's energy is still strong — use it for community and connection.

Last Quarter — Letting Go

Half dark, half light. Release what no longer serves you. Clear out physical clutter, end toxic patterns, forgive. The energy supports closure and completion.

Waning Crescent — Rest & Restore

A thin crescent remains. The darkest days of the cycle. Rest, reflect, retreat. Don't start new projects. Sleep more. The new moon is coming.

Simple Full Moon Ritual

  1. Gather: a candle, paper, pen, a bowl of water
  2. Write down everything you want to release
  3. Light the candle and read your list aloud
  4. Burn the paper (safely) or tear it into the water
  5. Sit in silence for 5 minutes, breathing deeply
  6. Thank the moon and blow out the candle

New Moon Intention Setting

Keep it simple: write 3-5 intentions in present tense. "I am," not "I will be." Place the paper under a clear quartz crystal. Revisit it at the full moon to check your progress.
